Ecology vocabulary and concepts

TermDefinition
Carnivore Feeds only on other animals
Community A group of organisms or populations living and interacting with one another in a particular environment.
Consumer An organism that gets its food energy from producers.
Decomposer Organisms that break down dead/decaying matter and return the nutrients to the soil.
Ecology The study of the interactions between organisms and their environment.
Ecosystem A community of living and non-living things.
Food Chain A model used to show how energy from food passes from one organism to another.
Food Web A model used to describe a series of overlapping food chains
Habitat The physical location of where an organism lives within a community.
Herbivore A consumer that feeds on only plants
Niche The role of an organism within the ecosystem.
Omnivore A consumer that feeds on both plants and animals.
Population The same species living together in the same place at the same time.
Predator An organism that hunts and eats other animals.
Prey An organism that is hunted and eaten by other animals
Producer Something that makes its own food
