Continuum | An imaginary line running from one extreme to another showing other possibilities in between. |
Interruption | When a speaker begins to talk without the previous speaker finishing, in an attempt to take over the conversation and gain control |
Main clause | A part of a sentence which is independent and can stand alone or alongside a subordinate clause. |
Micropause | an even shorter pause in spoken text. |
overlap | When a peaker5 begins to speak over another previous speaker as a way to show their enthusiasm or support. An overlap is more cooperative and supportive, where an interruption is more competitive. |
Paralinguistic features | Non verbal aspects of communication i.e. intonation/ pause which help to convey meanings effectively. |
Pause | A short break in spoken text. |
Subordinate clause | Dependent on the main clause. It cannot stand alone. |
Transcript | An exact written representation of speech. |
Turn taking | The pattern of spontaneous interactive speech in which the participants cooperate or compete for the roles of listener/ speaker. |
