GEOMETRIC Vocabulary

Circle A round shape that looks like the letter 'O'
Square A shape with four equal sides and every angle is a right angle (90 degrees)
Triangle A shape with three sides and three corners
Rectangle A shape with four sides where opposite sides are the same length and every angle is a right angle
Hexagon A shape with six sides and six corners
Pentagon A shape with five sides and five corners
Octagon A shape with eight sides and eight corners
Rhombus A shape that looks like a diamond or a slanted square with four equal sides
Parallelogram A shape with four sides where opposite sides are parallel and the same length
Trapezoid (US) / Trapezium (UK) A shape with four sides where at least one pair of opposite sides are parallel
Line A straight path that has no thickness and extends forever in both directions
Ray A straight path that starts at one point and extends forever in one direction
Line Segment A part of a line that has two endpoints
Angle The space between two intersecting lines or surfaces at or close to the point where they meet
Vertex The point where two lines or edges meet to form an angle
Perimeter The total distance around the edge of a shape
Area The amount of space inside a shape
Symmetry When one half of a shape is a mirror image of the other half
