Work Any activity which requires effort
Employment Work carried out in return for payment
Unemployment People who want to work for payment but are unable to find suitable employment
Labour Force All the people who are available to work
Employer Hires employees and pays them a wage or salary in return for the work that they have done
Employee Provides work in return for a wage or salary
Contract of Employment A written statement of terms and conditions of employment
Wage Usually paid weekly and is based on the number of hours worked
Salary Usually paid monthly and is the same every month regardless of the number of hours worked
Benefit=in-Kind Any non-cash income that is given to employees
Industrial Relations The relationship between employers and employees and how well they get on together
Strike When workers refuse to do their work because they have an Industrial Relations dispute
Trade Unions Organisations that are set up to protect workers
Shop Steward Elected by employees to represent them in meetings with the Trade Union
Volunteering Doing something without payment that will benefit other people, society or the environment
Outsourcing When a business pays outside firms to do specialist work
E-Working Working from home at least one day a week, using the internet to communicate with colleagues
