2.4 Understand the structure and function of main organs and major body systems

TermDefinition
circulatory system The body system that comprises the heart, blood vessels and blood. (Also called the cardiovascular system.)
circulatory system The function of this body system is to supply oxygen and nutrients to body tissues, to remove waste products from them, and to transport the hormones produced by the endocrine system.
respiratory system The body system that comprises the lungs, the airways through which we breathe, and the muscles that control breathing.
respiratory system The function of this body system is to take in oxygen for respiration, and to expel carbon dioxide, which is a waste product of respiration.
nervous system The body system that comprises the brain, nerves and sense organs.
nervous system The function of this body system is to process information about events in the body and its environment, and to coordinate the body’s responses to those events.
renal system The body system that comprises the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra.
renal system The function of this body system is the filtering of the blood to remove waste products and maintain the correct balance of salts, fluid and pH.
digestive system The body system that comprises the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestines and rectum.
digestive system The function of this body system is the ingestion, digestion and absorption of nutrients from food.
endocrine system The body system that comprises the body’s glands and the hormones they produce.
endocrine system The function of this body system is the regulation of processes in the body (for example by causing those processes to start, stop, speed up or slow down).
integumentary system The body system that comprises the skin, hair and nails.
integumentary system The function of this body system is to enclose and protect the body’s organs, to regulate body temperature, and as a major site of the nervous system’s touch and pain receptors.
musculoskeletal system The body system that comprises the skeleton, muscles, and the connective tissues that bind them together.
musculoskeletal system The function of this system in the body is structural support and movement. The skeleton also protects vital organs including the brain, heart and lungs.
