What is the fertile crescent? The Fertile Crescent is a large arc of rich, or fertile, farm land.
Where is the Fertile Crescent? The Fertile Crescent extends from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea.
What is Mesopotamia? Mesopotamia is the land BETWEEN the Tigris and Euphrates River.
Why is Mesopotamia fertile? Mesopotamia is fertile because each year, there are floods that bring silt, a mixture of rich soil and tiny rocks.
What is silt and what does it have to do with the flooding? Silt is a mixture of rich soil and tiny rocks. It has to do with flooding because, floods bring silt to the land.
What is division of labor? Division of labor is a arrangement which each worker specializes in a particular task or job
What is Cuneiform? How was it used? Cuneiform was the first system of writing in the world. It was used for keeping business records, history, law, grammar, and math.
What is a scribe? List details about the job. A scribe is a person who is hired to keep track of the items people traded.Becoming a scribe is a way to move up in social class.
The Plow (Sumerians) The Plow was one of the important Sumerian inventions. Pulled by oxen, plows broke through the clay soil of Sumer to prepare it for planting.
The sun-dial (the new Babylonians or Chaldeans) A device that uses the position of shadows cast by the sun to tell the time of the day.
The Wheel One of the Sumerians most important invention was the wheel. Used to build wheeled vehicles such as carts and wagons. Also, they invented the potter's wheel, or to spin clay to a shape like bowls.
Siege Warfare Attacks over, and over, and over, and over..........
battering-rams Bettering-rams were used to open gates by banging into a strong gate.
Moveable towers Moveable towers were used as defense so archers can attack.
Chariot Chariots are a wheeled, horse drawn cart used in battle.
What did the Sumerians contribute to Mathematics? The Sumerians contributed to math because it helped them calculate the ares of rectangles and squares.
What are Ziggurats? Where were they located (within city-states)? Why were they tall? A Ziggurat is a pyramid-shaped temple. They are located in the center of the city. They are tall because it was used to worship Gods.
What is the difference between polytheism and monotheism?
What is an EMPIRE? How is it different from city-states? A empire is a land with different territories and peoples under a single rule. It is different from city-states because city-states are a political unit consisting of a city and its surrounding countryside.
Which empire was known more for its trade than for winning battles? The Phoenicia empire was known more for its trade than for winning battles.
Why was the purple dye made by the Phoenicians so expensive (and used as a symbol of wealth and importance by monarchs)? It took 10,000 mollusks to create one gram of purple dye!!!
What was the code of Hammurabi? Who created it? How many laws were there? The code of Hammurabi was a set of 282 laws that dealt with almost every part of daily life. Hammurabi was the one who created the Hammurabi code.
