QuestionAnswer
Alliances Native American tribes working together or in an agreement with each other.
Barbados British plantation owners brought slaves and plantations from Barbados to SC.
Bartering This is trade without using money. An example would be Native American Deerskins for European Guns.
Cash Crop A crop that brings a colony a lot of money.
Clan A family group within Native American tribes.
Colony One part of a country loyal to its mother country.
Council The elders of a Native American tribe that helped the chief run the tribe.
Economy The amount of money people spend and make.
Gullah English and African dialects mixed and used by slaves.
Headright Lord Proprietors gave people land based on how many people they had with them.
Longhouses Native Americans used Longhouses for storage.
Low Country Well educated, rich, plantation and slave owning, upper class of SC.
Mercantilism Englands way of controlling trade in the colonies.
Militia Non-professional (unpaid) soldiers.
Naval Stores Tar and Pitch was used to make ships watertight/ water proof.
Plantation Large farms that used slave labor.
Proprietary Lord Proprietors ran the colony collecting taxes for the King of England, but did not provide enough protection for the Back Country.
Proprietor People who were given land to govern and make money for Britain.
Regulators Movement of people taking the law in their own hands in the Back Country.
Rivalry Two sides opposing each other like Catawba vs. Cherokee or British vs. French or Back Country vs. Low Country
Royal A colony run by the King and not Proprietors.
Settlement An attempt to start a civilized community.
Slavery Africans bought and sold to work on plantations due to cheap labor.
Stono Rebellion Slave rebellion near the Stono River that led to Slave Codes legally restricting the rights of slaves.
Thatched House This was a type of permanent housing used by the Native Americans.
Tribe A Native American society.
Up/Back Country Uneducated, Undeveloped, Poor, Subsistence Farmers in the back part of SC.
Wigwams This was a type of permanent housing used by the Native Americans.
