Algebraic and Coordinate Math Vocabulary

TermDefinition
x-axis the horizontal number line in a coordinate plane
y-axis the vertical axis on a coordinate plane
coordinate plane A coordinate system formed by the intersection of a horizontal number line, called the x-axis, and a vertical number line, called the y-axis.
coordinate pair An ordered pair of numbers used to locate a point on a coordinate grid.
ordered pair A pair of numbers that can be used to locate a point on a coordinate plane
corresponding terms Numbers that are in the same position in two or more related patterns
terms A number, a variable, or a product of numbers and variables.
pattern The geometric or regular arrangement of something in an area of study.
origin A fixed point from which coordinates are measured. (0,0)
x-coordinate The first number of an ordered pair. It corresponds to a number on the x-axis.
y-coordinate The second number of an ordered pair. It corresponds to a number on the y-axis.
evaluate form an idea of the amount, number, or value of; assess.
grouping symbol a device, such as a pair of parentheses, used to enclose an expression that should be simplified first.
expression A mathematical phrase that contains operations, numbers, and/or variables.
operation addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
rule a statement of relation between concepts
categorize To sort or arrange different items into classes or categories.
characterize describe the distinctive nature or features of a group of items, numbers, concepts
anticipate regard as probable; expect or predict
concept A general idea or thought about something
