4.7 Oceans

TermDefinition
Abyssal plain refers to the ocean bottom at great depths.
continental rise is a wide, gentle incline from the ocean bottom to the continental slope and can be several hundreds of miles wide.
continental shelf is the part of the edge of a continent covered by shallow ocean waters and extending to the steep slopes that descend into the deep part of the ocean.
continental slope is the region between the continental shelf and the continental rise.
current is a large stream of water that flows in the ocean.
depth is the measurement from the ocean’s surface to the floor in one given spot.
Gulf Stream is a warm ocean current of the northern Atlantic ocean. It is located off of eastern North America and starts in the Gulf of Mexico.
Marine is relating to or living in the sea.
Ocean is the continuous saltwater body that covers about 70 percent of the surface of Earth.
ocean water complex mixture of gases, water, and dissolved solids.
ocean trench is a long narrow steep-sided depression in the ocean floor.
Plankton are tiny free-floating organisms that live water and serve as the basis for a marine food web.
zooplankton Animal-like plankton
phytoplankton Plant-like plankton
Salinity is the measure of all the salts in water.
tide is the rise and fall of ocean water levels caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun on Earth.
