7.10 ABC Ecosystems and Environments

QuestionAnswer
Ecosystem a system comprising of all the biotic and abiotic factors in an area and all the interactions among them
Biome one of the world's major communities, classified according to the predominant vegetation and characterized by adaptation of organisms to that particular environment
Habitat a place where an organisms naturally lives and grows
Microhabitat a very small specialized habitat, such as space under a rock
Population a group of interacting individuals of the same species located in the same area
Biodiversity the number of different species of plants and animals in an area
Climax Community a relatively stable state of succession, or the end product of succession
Succession (Ecological Succession) a series of changes in the species composition of a community over time
Sustainable capable of maintaining the current community at a steady level without exhausting natural resources ot causing severe ecological damage
Biotic Factors a living or once living part of an organism's habitat
Primary Succession an ecological succession that begins in an area where no biotic community previously existed
Secondary Succession succession on a site where an existing community has been disrupted
Abiotic Factors the non-living parts of an ecosystem such as soil, climate, and rainfall
Organism an individual animal, plant, or single-celled life form
Terrestrial Biome large geographic land areas withsimilar climates and ecosystems
Aquatic Biome various aquatic systems that make up distinct communities; largest and most diverse biomes
