conservative those who believe in following tradition and having a government who does less and allows its people more freedom
liberal those who believe in allowing the government to flexibly expand beyond established constraints (do more)
liberatarian those who have a high regard for civil liberties, are conservative on economic issues and liberal on social issues
exit polls conducted outside the polls on election day to predict the outcome of the election
focus group a small group of citizens - 10 to 40 people - gathered to hold conversations about issues or candidates
moderate those who never fall fully into being conservative OR liberal
margin of error an amount that is allowed for in case of miscalculation
political socialization the process by which one develops political opinions
populist political party formed in the 1890s that advocated the interests of labor and farmers, free coinage of silver and government control of monopolies
progressive political party formed in 1912, advocating popular control of government and more power to the people (direct primaries, women's suffrage, the initiative, the referendum)
push polling a telephone poll with an ulterior motive
random sample poll where every single member of the "universe" will have an equal chance for selection
saliency the amount of importance an issue holds to an individual or a group
sampling error the difference between poll outcomes
stratification assuring that the population and the sample taken are balanced
straw poll simple scientific tallies of 50 or 60 selected voters to make rough predictions on upcoming elections
tracking poll asks the people same or similar questions over time to track the answers
valence issues concerns or policies that are viewed the same way by people with a variety of ideologies
wedge issues issues that sharply divide the public
