Words for the Workplace

TermDefinition
benefits things that the employer pays for to help the employees, ex. health insurance, sick days, paid vacation days, etc.
career path the plan for moving up in the company, for earning more responsibility and pay
competition when two or more people who want the same thing fight to get it
contract an agreement between two people that says what each person will do
discrimination treating someone unfairly because of his/her race, sex, religion, or age
entrepreneur someone who starts and runs his/her own business
executive someone in a company who has a lot of power over other employees and a lot of responsibilities
human resources the part (department) of a company that manages benefits and hires employees
income all the money that you get, usually by working
internship a way of learning how to do a job: you work at the company for little or no pay, and the company teaches you
job review your employer or boss tells you if you are doing a good job or not; an evaluation
journeyman someone who has a skill that must be learned, ex. a carpenter, an electrician, a plumber, etc.
mentor a person who is very good at his/her job and helps someone who is new to the same kind of job
minimum wage the lowest wage a company can legally pay its employees
pension what the company pays you when you have retired, i.e. are too old to work
wage how much you are paid
