earthquake An event that occurs when rocks along the plate boundaries shift suddenly and release their stored energy
epicenter The point on the earth directly above the focus
fault A break in the earth's surface along which rock can move
focus Beginning point of an earthquake
geyser A spring that periodically blows steam and hot water into the air
hot spot A volcano that occurs where a pool of intensely hot magma rises toward the surface, melting rock until it breaks through the crust
hot spring Water that rises to the earth's surface as it is heated by a magma pool
igneous rock Rock formed as magma and lava harden
lava Magma that has broken through the surface of the earth
lithosphere The crust and upper area of the earth’s mantle
magma chamber Pockets of molten rock deep in the earth's lithosphere
magnitude The strength of the seismic waves of an earthquake.
mud pot A hot spring that has more mud than water
plate boundary The place where plates meet
plates Large pieces of the earth's crust that floats on the melted rock in the earth's mantle
pyroclastic flow An avalanche of red-hot dust and gases that races down the sides of some volcanoes
Ring of Fire A ring of volcanoes found in an area around the Pacific Ocean
seismograph A machine scientists use to detect, time, and measure the movements of the earth.
seismologist Scientists who study the movement of the earth.
seismic wave Vibrations or waves of energy related to earthquakes
tephra A mixture of cinder, ash, and rock
tsunami Giant waves caused by earthquake, volcano, or landslides occuring under or near the ocean.
vog Volcanic fog or gases (deadly)
volcano A crack in the earth's crust through which molten rock comes to the surface
volcanologist A scientist who studies volcanoes
