Jealousy may be shown by negative/hostile behaviors. Seep problems & regression may occur. Parents need to show love & help to understand he/she will not be displaced by new baby |
How should RN respond to parents who are disappointed w/ sex of newborn? | Help parents acknowledge & talk about feelings to help cope w/ their disappointment & to faciliate their attachment w/ child |
What RN measures can help the mother of twins attach to her babies? | Provide oppurtunities for frequent contact w/ each infant to help parents interact with each twin individually rathe than interacting w/ them as a "package". It is essential to point out unique qualities & characteristics of each infant individually |
What does "mothering the mother" entail? | Provide physical & psychosocial care for new mom during early period after birth. RN should meet physicla needs, listento mom's concerns & provide teaching. When mom's needs are met, she can meet the infant's needs more easily. |
New parents may not recognize signals from infant who has had enough stimulation & needs to rest. What should the RN teach parents to recognize? | Signs of overstimulation include looking away, splaying fingers, arching back & fussiness. These are clues that infant needs ome quiet time. |
