factors | Numbers that are multiplied together to find a product. 3 x 2 = 6; 3 and 2 are factors |
compatible numbers | Numbers that are easy to compute mentally. 9 and 1 are compatible numbers |
product | The answer in a multiplication problem. 3 x 2 = 6; 6 is the product |
estimate | A number close to an amount that tells about how much or how many. We can estimate $9.86 to be $10 |
divisor | The number by which a number is being divided. 10 / 2 = 5; 2 is the divisor |
dividend | The number that is divided in a division problem. 10/2 = 5; 10 is the dividend |
quotient | The answer in a division problem. 10/2 = 5; 5 is the quotient |
remainder | The number that is left over when a dividend cannot be divided equally. 10/3 = 3 R 1; 1 is the remainder |
inverse | An operation that checks the answer to another operation, the oppositie operation. Division and multiplication are inverse operations. Addition and subtraction are inverse operations. |
sum | The answer to an addition problem. 4 + 7 = 11; 11 is the sum |
decimal point | This separates the place values. 23.45; the . between the 3 and the 4 is the decimal point. |
decimal | 14.37 is a decimal. |
tenths | The place value one place to the right of the ones place. |
hundredths | The place value two places to the right of the ones place. |
thousandths | The place value three places to the right of the ones place. |
difference | The answer to a subtraction problem. 12 - 4 = 8; 8 is the difference |
align | Line up. You must align, or line up the decimal points when adding or subtracting decimals. |
