Antagonist | A person or force working against the protagonist, or central character, in a literary work |
Archetype | A symbol, image, plot pattern, or character type that occurs often in literature, such as the hero on a dangerous quest |
Static Character | A character who does not change during a literary work |
Secondary Character | Any character other than one of the main characters |
Direct Characterization | The writer TELLS the reader about the character; specific information about the character |
Indirect Characterization | The writer SHOWS you what a character is like through their actions, words, or the words and responses of other characters |
Motivation | The reason(s) a character does something |
External Conflicted | A character struggles against an outside force |
Internal Conflict | A character has a struggle within himself (in his own mind) |
Man vs Self | Conflict in which a character must make a decision or overcome some fear |
Man vs Society | Conflict between what a person wants to do and what his community, culture, or society teaches or believes |
Man vs Man | Struggle between two individuals (competition, fight, control) |
Foreshadowing | Giving hints about what will happen in a story |
Epic Hero | The larger-than-life central character in an epic poem |
Epic Poem | A long narrative poem about events of crucial importance to the history of a culture or nation |
Flashback | A literary device in which the author interrupts the chronological order of a narrative to show something that happened in the past |
First Person POV | The story is told from the point of view of one character, who used the pronouns I and me |
Third person POV | The story is told by someone who is outside the story |
Suspense | A feeling of curiosity or dread about what will happen next in a story |
Frame Story | A story that contains another story |
