Term | Definition |
Pericardium | The outer layer in contact with surrounding organs |
Veins | They return the deoxygenated blood back to the heart after the arteries carry blood out. |
Capillaries | A network throughout the body for the exchange of oxygen, metabolic waste products, and carbon dioxide between blood and tissue cells. |
Arteries | A vessel that carries blood high in oxygen content away from the heart to the farthest reaches of the body. |
Oxygenated | Oxygen that has been added to blood. |
Deoxygenated | Oxygen that has been removed from blood. |
Ventricals | A chamber of the heart that receives blood from one or more atria and pumps it by muscular contraction into the arteries. |
Agglutination | The clumping of cells such as bacteria or red blood cells in the presence of an antibody or complement. |
Atria | The thin-walled chambers of the heart that pump blood into the ventricles. |
Septum | A wall dividing a cavity or structure into smaller ones. |
Valves | Prevents the back flow of blood through its cusps or flaps of tissues |
Antibodies | Any of the numerous Y-shaped gamma globulin proteins found in the blood or lymph, and produced by B cells as an immune defense against foreign antigens. |
Pulse | A rhythmic beating in the arteries caused by the beating of the heart. |
Plasma | Fluid through which cellular components of blood, lymph, or intramuscular fluid are suspended. |
Platletets | An irregular, disc-shaped element in the blood that assists in blood clotting. |
White Blood Cells | Help protect the body from infection and disease. |
Red Blood Cells | Contains hemoglobin, lacks a nucleus, and transports oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from the tissues. |
Vaccine | A biological preparation that provides active acquired immunity to a particular disease. |
Immunity | The balanced state of multicellular organisms having adequate biological defenses to fight infection, disease, or other unwanted biological invasion, while having adequate tolerance to avoid allergy, and autoimmune diseases. |
Cancer | A term for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and can invade nearby tissues. |
