intertidal zone | the area of shoreline between high and low tides |
substrate | the bottom surface of a marine habitat |
epifauna | benthic animals that move about the surface of the sea bottom or are firmly attached to it |
sessile | a member of the epifauna that lives attached to a substrate |
desiccated | a term referring to an organism that has lost its body moisture |
vertical zonation | noticeable horizontal bands of organisms living within a certain range in the intertidal zone |
ecological succession | a gradually increasing occupation of new organisms into a specific area |
infauna | organisms that live under the sediment of an ecosystem |
littoral zone | another name for the intertidal zone |
tide pools | small pools of water left behind after the tide goes out |
headland | area of coastline that juts out farther than the rest of the coast |
bay | an area of the coast behind the rest of the shoreline |
upper intertidal zone | sometimes called the splash zone because it is rarely submerged and usually gets its moisture from the splash of wave action |
middle intertidal zone | begins at the extreme high water level of the spring tides and extends down to just above the average low-tide level |
lower intertidal zone | an area that is underwater most of the time |
