Point of Beginning | A term which is associated with metes and bounds. It can be any one of the corners and the first boundary can move in either direction from that point. |

Rectangular Survey | Method of land description that uses base and meridian lines, townships and sections. Also referred to as the US Government Survey Method. |
Section | Area of land one mile square in the Government or Rectangular Survey Method. It contains 640 acres. |
Tier | Horizontal row of townships that move upwards or downwards from the baseline. Counted north and south in the Government Survey Method. |
Township | 6 miles squared (36 miles) The largest land area used in the Government Survey System. |
