Noble gases | nonreactive gases, only found in there own nature. used in neon signs, balloons and light bulbs. |
Transition metals | less reactive metal. Hard dense metal that are useful as building materials, jewelry and coins. also used as oxides to make paints and pigments. |
Alkaline Earth metals | not as reactive as alkali metals, but still never found uncombined in nature. Serve as important minerals for our body. |
Alkali metal | they are so reactive that they are never found uncombined in nature. Metals soft enough to be cut with a butter knife. |
chemical reaction | the ability of atoms to combine or separate with other atoms to create new substances. |
Groups | the group of families on the periodic table are the columns numbered from 1-18. |
Metalloids | elements on both sides of zig zag line (staircase) have properties of both metals and nonmetals. |
non-metals | Has a dull appearance, is a poor conductor of heat and electricity. Can break easily, not ductile, not malleable, low density, low melting point and less reactive then metals. |
metals | solid at room temperature{except mercury}, shiny luster, can bend to wire, malleable, good conductor, high density and high melting point. |
periods | the period on the periodic table are the rows numbered from 1-7. The atomic number increases from left to right, those in the same period have the same number of energy levels or shells. Chemical properties are not all similar. |
Periodic table | arranges all of the known elements in order of increasing atomic number (# of protons). |
alloy | is a homogeneous mixture of two or more metals. |
Radioactivity | the process by which an unstable atomic nucleus will lose energy though the emission of particles or electromagnetic wave |
electromagnetic waves | known as radiation |
