hibernate | To go into a deep, sleeplike state for winter. |
migrate | To travel from one place to another and back again. |
instinct | An inherited behavior of an animal that helps it meet its needs. |
camouflage | The coloring, marking, or other physical appearance of an animal that helps it blend in with its surroundings. |
behavior | The way an organism usually acts in a certain situation. |
mimicry | An adaptation in which a harmless organism looks like an animal that is poisonous or that tastes bad, so that predators avoid it. |
learned behavior | A behavior that an animal doesn't begin life with but develops as a result of experience or by observing other animals. |
tadpole | A young frog that comes out of an egg and has gills to take in oxygen from the water. |
pupa | The stage of complete metamorphosis in which an insect changes from a larva to an adult. |
larva | The stage between egg and pupa in complete metamorphosis in insects. |
adaptation | A trait or characteristic that helps an organism survive. |
pollen | A powder-like material that plants need to make seeds. |
spore | A reproductive structure made by seedless plants, including mosses and ferns. |
pollination | The transfer of pollen from the male structures to the female structures of seed plants. |
metamorphosis | A phase in the life cycle of many animals during which they undergo major changes in body form. |
germinate | To start to grow (from a seed). |
reproduce | To make more living things of the same kind. |
flower | The part of a flowering plant that produces seeds. |
cone | The part of some nonflowering plants where seeds form. |
life cycle | The stages that a living thing passes through as it grows and changes. |
