Term | Definition |
Simple Sentence | contains one independent clause and no subordinate clauses. |
Compound Sentence | contains two or more independent clauses and no subordinate clauses. Joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction |
Complex Sentence | contains one independent clause and at least one subordinate clause. |
Sentence | a group of words that express a complete thought. |
Clause | a group of words that contains both a subject and a predicate. |
Independent Clause | a group of words that can stand by itself as a sentence. |
Dependent Clause | a group of words that cannot stand by itself as a sentence. |
Subordinating Conjunctions | these words introduce subordinate clauses. A word such as before, when, or because. |
Pharse | a group of words that does not contain a subject or predicate. |
Coordinating Conjunctions | connects words or groups of words of equal importance. |
Compound/Complex Sentence | a sentence having 2 or more independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses. |
