molecule | a group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction |
chemical bond | a rearrangement of electrons in two atoms that generates a force, causing the atoms to be bound to each other, forming a molecule |
chemical formula | a representation of a substance using symbols for its constituent elements |
compound | a substance formed when two or more chemical elements are chemically bonded together |
element | a substance consisting of atoms which all have the same number of protons |
chemical reaction | a process that involves rearrangement of the molecular or ionic structure of a substance |
reactant | a substance participating in a chemical reaction, especially one present at the start of the reaction |
product | the substances that are formed during the chemical change |
cross-link | a bond that links one polymer chain to another. they can be covalent bonds or ionic bonds |
monomer | a molecule that can be bonded to other identical molecules to form a polymer |
polymer | a chemical compound that is made of small molecules that are arranged in a simple repeating structure to form a larger molecule |
open system | an area that is exposed to different unknown variables during an experiment |
closed system | a physical system that doesn't exchange any matter with its surroundings |
Law of Conservation of Mass | matter cannot be created or destroyed in a chemical or physical reaction |
