Reproductive system | body system that allows for sexual reproduction; includes testes, ovaries, uterus and other male and female sex organs. |
ovum (Plural ova) | eg cell that is produced by the female reproductive system |
ovary | organ in which female gametes develop prior to fertilization |
uterus | organ of the female reproductive system in which fertilized egg attaches and a fetus develops. |
fallopian tube | tubes of connective tissue that attaches the ovary to the uterus in the female reproductive system and in which ferilization occurs. |
testis (plural testes) | organ of the male reproductive system that produces sperm |
testosterone | steroid hormone that id found in greater quantities in men then women and contributes to male sexual characteristics and development. |
ovulation | process by which egg is releases from the ovary and becomes available for fertilization |
menstrual cycle | series of changes on the female reproductive system that takes place over the course of one month |
zygote | cell that forms when a male gamete fertilizes a female gamete |
STD Sexually transmitted disease | disease that is passed from one person to another during sexual contact. |
Embryo | stage of development after the fertilized cell implants into the uterus but before the cells take on a recognizable shape |
Placenta | organ that develops in female mammals during pregnancy and carries nutrients from the mother to the embryo. |
Fetus | unborn offspring fromm the end of the eighth week after conception to the moment to birth. |
meiosis | form of nuclear division that divides a diploid cell into haploid cells: important in forming gametes form sexual reproduction |
mitosis | process by which a cell divides its nucleus and contents |
gamete | sex cell: an egg ot a sperm cell. |
fertilization | fusion of an egg and sperm cell |
sperm | male gamete |
homologous chromosomes | chromosomes that have the same length, appearance, and copies of genes, although the alleles may be different. |
chromatid | one half of a duplicated chromosome |
egg | female gamete |
haploid | cell that only has one copy of each chromosome |
diploid | cell that has two copies of each chromosome, one from an egg and one from a sperm |
somatic cell | cell that makes up all of the boy tissues and organs, except gametes |
