First People | Native people known today as the Wichitas and Affiliated Tribes. Descendants of the Plains Village Farmers, they are Oklahoma's oldest historical people as they occupied the land when the first Europeans arrived. |
tribal confederation | network of different villages or other groups united by language, lifestyle and tradition. |
semi-sedentary | living in a permanent settlement for only part of the year |
environmental adaptation | use of local materials in construction in response to natural and social conditions such as climate and cost |
brush arbor | an open-sided flat roofed structure under which Wichitas dried corn and meat |
mano and matate | stone tools used to grind corn into meal |
matrilineal | tracing family relationships and descent through the maternal line |
kinship | relationships between people of common ancestry |
clan | a group made up of blood relatives usually on the mother's side |
Corn Dance | the Wichitas' most important ceremonial event |
Sun Dance | a world renewal ceremony conducted by the Plains Apaches and Kiowas. |
