Question | Answer |
Communication uses | -Text messages (Short Message Device, SMS) -Instant messaging -social networking sites -media messages (Multimedia Messaging Service, MMS) -Voice calls -Video calls -Emails |
Leisure uses | -HD films on Blu-ray players -Display photos with digital photo frames -Watch more channels on digital TV -Stream films -Download music etc. |
Travel | -On the go -Find route using sat nav and GPS -Track location of cars and vans -Geotag images |
Audience and Purpose Wants vs needs | Who is using it and how will they use it. eg.g a teenager may want internet for social networking. I want as big widescreen as possible, but need something small that I can carry easily. |
Factors to consider when choosing | -User interface -Connectivity -Security -Compatibility with other devices -Cost -Convenience etc. |
Processor | Processor controls all functions of the devices. There are specialist microprocessors for different devices. |
Internal memory | Internal memory= Where program instructions and data. Measured bytes. |
Flash Memory | Type of peripheral that is ideal for portable digital devices because it doesn't lose data when turned off, no moving parts so cannot be easily damaged (solid state), can transfer data between devices and is removable. |
Hard disk Drives | High capacity which store terabytes of data. Not in portable devices as they contain moving parts which can be easily damaged. |
Types of flash memory | Secure Digital (SD) card- up to 4GB Micro SD cards- for smaller devices SDXC (Extended Capacity) card- up to 2TB USB flash drive/memory stick- plugs into USB port, up to 256GB SDHC (High Capacity card)- up to 32GB |
Input Devices | Type of peripheral which allows users to give instructions and insert data. Mouse Keyboard Webcam Touch screen Microphone |
Output devices | Type of peripheral which allows users to see or hear information after it has been processed. |
Connectivity- Data cable and bluetooth | Data cable connection- USB cable Bluetooth- Allows devices to communicate with each other wirelessly. Over short distances using radio waves. Bluetooth enabled/Bluetooth dongle. Printers/speakers can be bluetooth-enabled. |
Connectivity-Wifi | Method of wireless communication using radio waves. Longer distances. |
Synchronising | When two devices, such as a media player and computer, connected automatically to exchange data. Cloud synchronisation- Allow people to store data files on a remote server. Can accesss files from all digital devices. Automatically downloaded to all device |
Mobile Phones | Developed to allow people to make voice calls on the go. Multifunctional device- taken on functions that were, or are still done by other devices. Called convergence where they can perform other functions. |
Mobile Phone continued security, responsible use and needs | -Hide phone, set pin password, lock sim card, record IMEI number to block phone, restrict bluetooth usage. -Don't cyberbully, don't use when driving etc, don't overuse |
Computers | -Desktop computers -laptop computers -Netbook computers -tablet computers |
Computers features | -Processor speed -Sound/graphics card -Wifi -RAM -Storage Capacity -Number of USB ports -Battery life |
Ergonomics | Science of designing equipment so that it is comfortable and user-friendly. Can help prevent health problems and RSI. |
Health risks | -Eye strain -RSI -Neck and back problems -Pain in knees and legs |
Cameras and Camcorders | Digital zoom=crops and enlarges part of image, can affect image quality. Optical zoom= moves lens away from sensor and closer to subject, bringing light from subject closer. Resolution=Images made of pixels, megapixel-1 mill pixels. |
Cameras and Camcorders: GPS and Wifi | -GPS receiver so geographical coordinates can be sorted in metadata. -Wifi- Can email/ upload photos to online albums and social networking sites without downloading. |
Media players | Security- Biometric authentication, locks after a certain time, encryption of data, Remote management. |
Digital Rights Management (DRM) | Prevents you from making copies of audio and video files you have downloaded. Prevents transfer of files, protects copyright owner. |
Downloading and streaming | ADv- Saves time, less storage space Dis-Cannot keep local copy for offline viewing, limited availability for some streamed video, user experience is dependent on connection quality. |
Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) | If two devices are DLNA certified, then they are compatible straight out of the box. No need to transfer files or plug in anything. |
