Term | Definition |
Anorexia | lack of appetite resulting in the inability to eat |
Asthenia | condition of debility, loss of strength and energy, and depleted vitality |
Bradycardia | steady myocardium contraction but less than 60 contractions (hypotension) |
Constipation | Difficulty in passing stools or an incomplete or infrequent passage of hard stools |
Cyanosis | Bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes caused by an increase of deoxygenated hemoglobin in the blood |
Diaphoresis | secretion of sweat profusely due to heat, elevated body temperature, and mental/emotional |
Diarrhea | Frequent passage of loose, liquid stools; generally results from increased motility in the colon |
Ecchymosis | Discoloration of an area of the skin or mucous membrane (bruise) |
Edema | abnormal accumulation of fluid in interstitial |
Erythema | Redness or inflammation of the skin that results of dilation and congestion of superficial capillaries |
Fever | Elevated body temperatures above 98.6 F. (perexia) |
Fetid | pertaining to something that has a foul, putrid, or offensive odor (malodorous) |
Inflammation | protective response of the tissues of the body to irritation or injury |
Jaundice | Yellow tinge to the skin; usually indicates obstruction in the flow of bile from the liver |
Lethargy | state or quality of being indifferent, apathetic or sluggish |
Nausea | Sensation often leading to the urge to vomit |
Orthopnea | condition in which a patient has to sit or stand to breathe deeply or comfortably |
Pain | unpleasant sensation caused by noxious stimulation of sensory nerve ending |
Pallor | Unnatural paleness or absence of color to the skin |
Pruritus | A symptom of itching and an uncomfortable sensation leading to the urge to scratch |
Purulent Drainage (pus) | A creamy, viscous, pale yellow or yellow green exudate. Results from remains of liquified necrosis of tissue |
Sallow | Pertaining to unhealthy yellow color; more so of complexion of skin |
Scleral icterus | Color of Sclera is yellow. ***please note this is a type of jaundice*** |
Tachycardia | Regular heart contraction but with a beat greater than 100 beats/min |
Tachypnea | Abnormally rapid rate of breathing |
Vomit | The expelling of contents of the stomach through the esophagus and out of the mouth ***Please note: quality of vomitus gives cues to underlying cause of vomit*** |
