Chapter 6 vocabulary terms for science
igneous rock | Igneous rock is formed when magma cools and hardens. Most igneous rock is crystalline (full of crystals). |
magma | liquid rock produced under Earth’s surface; igneous rocks are made of magma |
crystalline | full of crystals |
intrusive | Magma that cools inside the Earth; generally has larger crystals. |
extrusive | Lava that cools at the surface; smaller crystals. |
coarse-grained | Igneous rocks that are composed of large mineral grains are described as having a coarse-grained texture. (Ex: granite) |
fine-grained | Igneous rocks that are composed of small crystals are described as having a fine-grained texture. (Ex: rhyolite) |
porphyritic | A rock with a mix of small and large crystals. (Ex: granite) |
glassy | Quickly cooling magma may form a rock that has a glassy texture. (Ex: obsidian) |
vesicular | When magma contains a large amount of dissolved gases and cools rapidly, the gases become trapped as bubbles in the rock that forms. |
felsic | forms from magma with high concentration of silica. (Ex: granite) |
mafic | forms from magma with high concentration of iron and magnesium. (Ex: basalt) |
