What is the Great Compromise? The Great Compromise is a compromise reached between Virginia and New Jersey on how the government is run
What did the Great Compromise entail? The Great Compromise said that Congress should have two houses, representatives would be by population, and the Senate would have two representatives from each state.
Did the Great Compromise pass? Yes
What is Federalism? Federalism is the constitutional powers shared by both state and national government.
What is popular sovereignty? (Give Example) Popular Sovereignty is the idea that choices made about the government should be chosen by the people. (Elections)
What does domestic mean? Domestic means something local to one country
What does foreign mean? Foreign means something done or made outside of a country
What is the Northwest Ordinance? The Northwest Ordinance was a law that decided how new states in the west would be governed
What is the Missouri Compromise? The Missouri Compromise was a decision to draw an imaginary line through the country, everything on top of that line was a free state, and everything below was slave
What is the Tallmadge amendment? The Tallmadge amendment was a proposal to add Missouri to the Union, but only as a free state
What is the 'gag rule'? The gag rule was a law stating that any issues presented to Congress about slavery would be ignored
What was the Wilmot Proviso? The Wilmot Proviso was a proposal stating that any land gained from the Mexican-American war would be free
Did the Wilmot Proviso pass? No
Was California added as a free or slave state? California was added as a free state
What did the Compromise of 1850 entail? The compromise of 1850 entailed that California would join the Union as a free state, New Mexico and Utah territories would be able to choose whether they were free or slave, abolished slave trade in DC, and had a stricter fugitive slave law added.
Was the Compromise passed? Yes
What was the fugitive slave act? The fugitive slave act was a law that said that any escaped slaves were to be brought back to their owners immediately, and any allies of the slaves could be jailed as well
What was 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'? Uncle Tom's cabin was a novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, this novel aroused anger and empathy towards the slaves because it was such an accurate representation of slave life
