Levels of Measurement

Nominal   This is the weakest level of measurement. Categories are very broad and each participant of the study will fit into only one of the categories. Each category is independent of the other.

Nominal Example:   male vs. female, yes vs. no

Ordinal   This level of measurement is also known as a ranking scale.

Ordinal   Data that is collected will be placed into independent categories, however, the categories have a qualitative relationship regarding the order of ranking.

Ordinal   There is not equality between each category.

Ordinal Example:   manual muscle testing, levels of assistance

Interval   A metric measurement scale where the distance between any two numbers is of equal amounts. In this scale the unit of measure and zero are both arbitrary.

Interval Example:   Celsius temperature scale, calendar time  
🗑
Ratio   A metric measurement scale where the unit of measurement is arbitrary, however, there is an absolute zero.

Ratio Example:   weight and length scales
