Question
Answer
volcano   a special type of mountain with an opening or vent at its top
🗑
magma   hot melted rock that comes out of a volcano
🗑
erupt   to burst out
🗑
magma   hot, melted rock and gases deep inside the earth
🗑
earthquake   a shaking or sliding of the surface of the earth
🗑
landform   a shape on the earths surface
🗑
plain   a large flat area of land
🗑
plateau   a large flat area of land that is high
🗑
weathering   the breaking apart and changing of rocks
🗑
erosion   the carrying away of weathered rocks or soils by water, wind or other causes.
🗑
glacier   a huge amount of moving ice
🗑
How does a volcano erupt?   1. Magma rises from deep inside the earth. It gathers in a magma chamber. 2. Magma pushes upward through cracks in the earth. 3. Lava erupts from the volcano. 4. Lava builds up outside the volcano. It cools and hardens. A mountain forms.
🗑
How do volcanoes change the earths surface?   Each time it erupts, more lava spreads and it can form mountains or more volcanoes. If it forms under the ocean, islands can be formed.
🗑
How do earthquakes change the earth's surface?   New cracks form on the earth's surface and land can move up, down or sideways.
🗑
How do scientists study earthquakes and volcanoes?   They try to predict earthquakes and volcanoes by using instruments and satellites. They may also take pictures and samples.
🗑
What are some ways to stay safe during an earthquake?   Make a kit consisting of flashlights, batteries, radio, first aid kit, food, water and clothes. You should duck, cover and hold. Stay away from windows, wires, trees, signs. Follow your teachers instructions.
🗑
What are the major landforms in North America   Plateau, valley, bay, mountain, river, lake, plain, hill, cliff, ocean.
🗑
Describe some landforms and some areas of water on the earth's surface?   Cliff - very steep wall of rock or soil. Ocean - all the salt water that covers most of the earths surface. Valley - a low area between mountains or hills Bay - part of an ocean or lake Hill - a high place on the earth's surface. Hills are smaller an
🗑
What does weathering do to rocks?   It may cause it to crack and crumble
🗑
Describe ways that erosion may happen?   Rivers - water may carry away bits of weathered rock. Glaciers - may carry rock away with them when they move. Wind - can carry away small bits of dust or sand, they can shape objects Gravity - causes rocks and soils to move down slopes
🗑
What are some ways that plants and animals change the earth's surface?   Roots can crack sidewalks and boulders and even move boulders. Plant roots can help to hold the soil and prevent erosion. Animals may live in the soil and dig through it.
🗑
How do people cause or prevent erosion?   People cause erosion when they dig into it, build on it, and plant in it. People prevent erosion by putting up wind fences and farming the land.
