What is humanism?   A philosophy that has as its basis man's ability to discern truth through his own rationality rather than through the texts of a divine authority.

Compare/contrast medieval art to renaissance art.   Medieval art: crowded, used bright colors, chaotic composition, idealistic, flat, no emotions on faces, spiritual. Renaissance art: spacious, muted colors, 3-dimensional, triangular composition, emotional faces, psychological.

What is the significance of Masaccio's work The Holy Trinity?   It was one of the earliest works to incorporate the aspects that set Renaissance art apart from Medieval art: it creates a 3-dimensional scene in a triangular arrangement of people with emotive faces. Details relate back to Roman architecture.

What does Fabriano's work Adoration of the Magi illustrate?   A late work that embodies Gothic elements in the International style,it features bright colors, crowded spaces, and ornate use of gold with 2-dimensional characteristics.

What was the significance of Florence, Italy?   In the fifteenth century, Florence became the center for the rebirth of culture, art, trade, that sythesized classical roots to the thinking of the time.

Who were the Medicis?   A prosperous banker, Cosimo Medici was a Florentine citizen who championed the arts and became a benefactor of many artists. His son, Piero, succeeded him after his death in 1464 and supported Donatello and Botticelli. Lorenzo was Piero's son.

Who were some of the artists in Laurentian Florence?   The Laurentian Era, so called for Lorenzo "the Magnificent" Medici, was when daVinci and Michelangelo both produced some of their finest works. Botticelli also continued to work during this era.

Who was Ficino?   A priest, Marsilio Ficino, who was supported by the Medicis for translating the works of Plato.

What was the central theme of Luther's 95 Theses?   Primarily aimed at the selling of indulgences, Luther's Theses were aimed at the pope and his campaign to raise money to rebuild St. Peter's through this practice, which had become corrupt.

What is excommunication?   The separation of a person from the communion of the church; banishment from the sacraments of the church until reconciliation is made. Luther was excommunicated for his 95 Theses.

What were the Acts of Supremacy?   King Henry VIII decreed that he was the supreme head of the Church in England. Queen Mary repealed it, but a second Act by Queen Elizabeth I required anyone holding office to swear allegience to the monarch as head of both Church and state.

What was the Elizabethan Period?   The era when Queen Elizabeth I reigned (1558-1603), when the arts in England flourished, the political scene was mostly peaceful, and economics were more stable.
