Question
Answer
Give the definition for an element and a compound?   An element is a substance that cannot be split into simpler substances by chemical means. A compound is a substance hat is made up of two or more different elements chemically combined together.
🗑
Give the definitions for an atom and a molecule?   An atom is the smallest part of an element. A molecule is two or more elements combined.
🗑
Give the definition for an isotope?   isotopes are atoms of the same element that have different mass numbers.
🗑
Can you give the properties of iron, sulphur and iron sulphide?   Iron: Magnetic, metal, pure elment, shiny silver Sulphur: Non magnetic, non metal, pure element, yellow. Iron Sulphide: Non magnetic, compound, dark grey.
🗑
Can you show how the properties of the Iron Sulphide differ from that of the individual elements of iron and sulphur?   Passing a magnet near the new substance shows that it is not magnetic any more.
🗑
Can you compare the properties of the following compounds to their individual elements – H2O, CO2?   H2O: Hydrogen is a flammable gas and oxygen is essential in combustion, but combined they make a liquid that is not flammable. CO2: Carbon is a solid and part of all life and oxygen is necessary for breathing, combined in CO2 it makes a gas that can kill
🗑
Can you give the definition for atomic number?   The atomic number is the number of Protons in the nucleus.
🗑
Who was the inventor of the periodic table?   Dimitri Mendeleev.
🗑
Can you identify groups 1 to 8 on the periodic table?   The elements in a group have similar physical or chemical characteristic of the outermost electron shells of their atoms
🗑
Can you identify periods 1 to 7 on the periodic table?   The elements of the same period have the same number of shells. Period 1 = 1 shell, Period 2 = 2 shells...
🗑
Can you give the names for group 1, group 2, group 7 and group 8?   1 Alkali, 2 Alkaline earth metals, 3 Boron group, 4 Carbon group, 5 Nitrogen, 6 oxygen group, 7 Halogens, 8 Noble gasses.
🗑
Can you describe why group 8 elements do not react with other elements?   Their outer shells are full and they do not want to take on or give away any electrons.
🗑
Can you list the symbols for the metallic elements copper, zinc, aluminium, iron, silver and Gold?   Cu, Zn, Al, Fe, Ag, Au.
🗑

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.
