Identifying variables in a scientific investigation

Controlled Variables   All the variables that a scientist wants to remain constant or stay the same throughout the investigation.

Observation   Information gathered using the senses.

Inference   A conclusion or an assumption based on observations.

Scientific Theory   an explanation for why things work or how things happen.

Scientific Law   a statement based on repeated experimental observations that describes some aspects of the universe.

Control Group   The group in an investigation that does NOT get the independent variable.
