Reference Map   A map that shows location of the geographic areas in which data is tabulated

Thematic Map   A map or chart that is specially designed to show a particular theme that is connected to a specific geographic area.

GPS (Global Positioning System)   A radio navigation system that provides a map and gives direction in order for someone to get to a specific place.

GIS (Geographic Information System)   This is a system that allows us to see the geographic forms and features of a particular place on a map.

Distance Scale   A scale used to measure the distance of something on a map (and it's usually put in easier terms since you cant make a really big map to represent the numbers in the distance).

Directional Indicator   A compass that assists something like an airplane pilot by flying a predetermined course.

Inset Map   This is a more detailed and larger scale representation of a specific area on a map.

Legend   Something included on most maps (kind of like a key) that tells you what certain things like colors and symbols on a map represent.

Latitude (Parallels)   The angular distance of a place north or south of the Earth's equator.

Longitude (Meridians)   The angular distance of a place east or west on Earth.  
🗑
Equator   An imaginary line drawn equally distant across the middle of the earth, separating the northern and southern hemispheres (0 degrees).

Prime Meridian   A planet's meridian (represented by a line) represented by the zero of longitude.  
🗑
Northern Hemisphere   The half of the planet that is north of the equator.  
🗑
Eastern Hemisphere   The part of the earth that is East of the Prime Meridian, including Eurasia, Africa, and Australia.

Southern Hemisphere   The half of the planet that is south of the equator.

Western Hemisphere   The part of the planet that is west of the Prime Meridian, including North and South America.

Continents   Any of the world's main continuous expanses of land (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South America).

Map Grid   A symbolized network of lines that represent the parallels/meridians or coordinates.
