Term | Definition |
Glute max OIA | originates on the posterior gluteal line of the illium, the dorsal surface of the sacrum and the sacrotuberous ligament. Inserts on the gluteal tuberosity and the iliotibial tract of the femur. Action externally rotates thigh and extends the hip |
Glute Medius OIA | Originates between anterior and posterior gluteal lines of the illium. Inserts on the greater trochanter. Action- internally rotates the hip and abducts the hip |
Tensor Fascia Latae OIA | Originates on the illiac crest and the ASIS and inserts on the iliotibial tract. Action- flexes abducts and internally rotates the thigh |
Piriformis | Originates on the sacrum S2-S4, sacrotuberous ligament and the ischium below PSIS. Inserts on the greater trochanter. externally rotates thigh. Can abduct and internally rotate when hip is flexed. |
Obturator internus | originates on the inner surface of the pelvis, from the obterator membrane and edges of the obturator foramen. inserts on the greater trochanter. Action externally rotates thigh and abducts flexed thigh |
Obturator externus | O: external surface of the pubis and ishium along the obturator margin of obturator foramen and from obturator membrane. I :trochanteric fossa. A: Externally rotates hip |
Quadratus femoris | o: ishial tuberosity I: intertrochanteric crest. a: ER hip |
Biceps femoris | O; long head from ishial tuberosity and and lower sacrotuberous ligament. Short head from the lateral linea aspera and lateral supracondylar line and lateral intramuscular septum. I: lateral side of head of fibula and lateral condyle of fibula |
Biceps femoris action | both head flex the knee long head extends the hip |
Semitendonosis | O:Arises with the long head of the biceps from the ischial tuberosity
I:Upper part of the medial surface of the tibia (part of pes anserinus)
A:Flexes the knee; able to extend the hip and internally rotate the flexed knee |
Semimembranosus | O:Ischial tuberosity and adjacent ischial ramus
I:Posteriomedial aspect of the medial tibial condyle
A:Flexes knee and tends to internally rotate it; extends hip |
Pectineus | O:Pectineal line of pubis (superior ramus)
I:Upper half of pectineal line of femur
A: Flexes and adducts the hip and internally rotates it |

I:Middle 1/3 of linea aspera
A:Adducts, flexes, and externally rotates thigh |
Adductor brevis | O:Body and inferior ramus of pubis
I:Pectineal line of femur and upper part of linea aspera
A:Adducts, flexes, and internally rotates hip |
Adductor magnus | O:Ishial tuberosity and ischiopubic ramus
I:Gluteal tuberosity, medial linea aspera, medial supracondylar line and adductor tubercle
A:Adducts hip; upper fibers flex and internally rotate hip; lower fibers extend andexternally rotate hip |
Gracillis | O:Body and inferior ramus of pubis
I:Upper part of the medial tibia (part of pes anserinus)
A:Adducts hip; flexes knee; may internally rotate tibia on femur |
Illiopsoas | O:Iliacus: upper part of iliac fossa, ala of sacrum and adjacent ligaments;
Psoas major: lateral lumbar vertebrae bodies, their discs, and transverse processes
I:Lesser trochanter
A:Flexes and internally rotates hip; psoas extends and laterally bends |
Rectus Femoris | O:Anterior inferior iliac spine (AIIS) and posterosuperior aspect of acetabular rim
I:Tibial tuberosity via patellar tendon/ligament
A:Extends knee and flexes hip |
Vastus lateralis | O: Intertrochanteric line, greater trochanter, gluteal tuberosity, upper part of lateral linea aspera and lateral intermuscular septum
I;Tibial tuberosity via patellar tendon
A: extends knee |
Vastus Medialis | O:Intertrochanteric line, medial linea aspera, medial supracondylar line, and medial intermuscular septum
I:Tibial tuberosity via patellar tendon
