Colloid A mixture that has particles too small to see but will cause a beam of light to disperse
Suspension A mixture that has visible particles suspended in the fluid
Tyndall effect Scattering of light by particles too small to see
Physical process Does not alter the properties of the substances involved
Chemical process Chemically alters a substance by creating or breaking chemical bonds
Element A pure substance composed of all the same atoms
Intrinsic (Intensive) property Unique to each substance no matter how large or small the sample size
Extrinsic (Extensive) property Depends on the amount of material in a sample
Density Mass of a sample divided by its volume
