Science - Atoms, etc

QuestionAnswer
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Mass The amount of matter in an object.
Volume The amount of space an object occupies.
Density Mass divided by volume.
States of Matter The physical forms in which matter exists - solid, liquid, gas, and plasma.
Atom The smallest unit of an element that retains the properties of that element.
Proton A positively charged particle found in the nucleus of an atom.
Neutron A particle with no charge found in the nucleus of an atom.
Electron A negatively charged particle that orbits the nucleus.
Nucleus The center of an atom, containing protons and neutrons.
Atomic Number The number of protons in an atom's nucleus.
Molecule Two or more atoms bonded together.
Compund A substance made for two or more different elements chemically bonded.
Chemical Bond The force that holds atoms together in a molecule or compound.
Chemical Formula A representation of a compound using element symbols and numbers (e.g., H₂O).
Mixture A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically bonded.
Homogeneous Mixture A mixture that looks the same throughout (e.g., saltwater).
Heterogeneous Mixture A mixture where you can see the different parts (e.g., salad).
Solution A type of homogeneous mixture where one substance dissolves in another.
Solute The substance that is dissolved.
Solvent The substance that does the dissolving.
Element A pure substance made of only one kind of atom.
Periodic Table A chart that organizes all known elements by their properties.
Group (Family) A column on the periodic table; elements in the same group have similar properties.
Period A row on the periodic table; elements in the same period have the same number of energy levels.
Metals Elements that are shiny, conduct electricity, and are malleable.
Nonmetals Elements that are dull, poor conductors, and brittle.
Metalloids Elements with properties of both metals and nonmetals.
Valence Electrons Electrons in the outermost energy level of an atom; important in bonding.
Reactant A substance that is present at the start of a chemical reaction and is changed during the reaction.
Product A substance that is formed as a result of a chemical reaction.
Law of Conservation of Matter Matter cannot be created or destroyed in a chemical reaction; the total mass of reactants equals the total mass of products.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
