keratin | a protein that thickens and toughens the skin, plus forms the hair and nails |
melanin | a dark pigment that gives the hair and skin color, plus protects the skin against the sun's radiation |
nail | a flat keratinized outgrowth of the skin that covers the dorsal surface of the terminal phalanges |
sebaceous gland | a skin gland that produces sebum, usually associated with hair follicles |
sebum | a fatty secretion of the sebaceous gland that lubricates the hair and skin |
skin | the tissue that covers the body; aka the integument |
subcutaneous layer | the layer of tissue beneath the skin |
sweat gland | a gland that releases perspiration on the skin's surface to cool the body; some may release secretions with cellular material in response to stress |
