melanin a dark pigment that gives the hair and skin color, plus protects the skin against the sun's radiation
nail a flat keratinized outgrowth of the skin that covers the dorsal surface of the terminal phalanges
sebaceous gland a skin gland that produces sebum, usually associated with hair follicles
sebum a fatty secretion of the sebaceous gland that lubricates the hair and skin
skin the tissue that covers the body; aka the integument
subcutaneous layer the layer of tissue beneath the skin
sweat gland a gland that releases perspiration on the skin's surface to cool the body; some may release secretions with cellular material in response to stress
