acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) immune system failure resulting from infection with HIV infects certain T cells and interferes w/ immunity
allergen a substance that causes an allergic response
allergy hypersensitivity
anaphylactic reaction an exaggerated allergic reaction to a foreign substance can lead to death from circulatory collapse and respiratory distress if untreated
angiodema localized edema with large hives/wheals similar to uticaria but involves deeper layers of the skin and subcutaneous tissue
autoimmune disease a condition in which the immune system produces antibodies against a person's own tissues
CD4 + T lymphocyte count a count of T cells with CD4 receptors for the AIDS virus less than 200/µL of blood signifies severe immunodeficiency
delayed hypersensitivity reaction am allergic reaction involving T cells that takes at least 12 hours to develop
epinephrine (adrenaline) a stimulant produced by the adrenal glands and sympathetic NS activates the bodily systems needed to meet stress can be used as a drug to treat anaphylaxis and shock
human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) the virus that causes AIDS
hypersensitivity an immunologic reaction to a substance that is harmless to most allergy
immunodeficiency a congenital or acquired failure of the immune system to protect against disease
Kaposi sarcoma cancerous lesions of the skin and other tissues comomon in those with AIDS
Sjögren syndrome an autoimmune disease resulting from a dysfunction of exocrine glands, affecting the secretion of bodily fluids
systemic lupus erythmatosus inflammation of connective tissue that affects the skin and other organs patients are sensitive to light and may have a red butterfly-shaped rash over the nose and cheeks
systemic sclerosis a diffuse connective tissue disease that may involve any bodily system AKA scleroderma
urticaria a skin reaction accompanied by round, raised eruptions/wheals and itching AKA hives
