Unit 3 Lesson 1 & 2

Crust The thin and solid outermost layer of earth above the mantel
Mantel The layer of rock between earths crust and core
Core The central part of earth below the mantel
Lithosphere The solid outer layer of earth that consists of the crust and the ridged upper part of the mantel
Asthenosphere The soft layer of the mantel on which the plates move
Mesosphere The strong lower part of the mantel between the asthenosphere
Seismic Wave A wave of energy that travels through earth and away from an earthquake in all directions
Continental Drift the hypothesis that a single large landmass broke up into smaller landmasses to form the continents which then drifted to there present locations
Plate Tectonics Theory the theory that earths outer layer is made up of large moving pieces called tectonic plates
Sea-Floor Spreading the process by which new oceanic lithosphere forms when magma rises to earths surface at mid ocean
Subduction The process by which one lithosphere plate moves beneath another plate as a result of tectonic forces
Magnetic Reversal The process by which earths magnetic north pole and south pole switch positions periodically
Convection current Any movement of matter that results from differences in density
