Unit 1 Vocabulary

Atom the smallest particle of an element.
Element a pure substance composed of the same type of atom.
Compound pure substance made of two or more kinds of atoms.
Substance any form of matter that is uniform throughout and has consistent properties.
Periodic Table of Elements a table in which all the known elements are arranged by properties.
Matter anything that has mass and takes up space.
Lithosphere the solid Earth; made up of limited number of elements (mainly O and Si).
Hydrosphere all the water on the Earth.
Biosphere the sum of all living matter.
Atmosphere the layer of gas surrounding planet Earth.
Mixture made of a blend of elements and compounds; not a pure substance.
Uniform Composition made of the same evenly distributed substance or combination of substances.
Properties physical and chemical characteristics of matter used to describe or identify a substance.
Volume a measure of how much space the matter occupies.
Mass a measure of how much matter is present in a substance.
Chemical Change a change that alters the identity of a substance resulting in a new substance.
Physical Change a change to a substance that occurs without forming a new substance.
Chemical Property a characteristic that can only be observed or measured when atoms of matter rearrange.
Physical Property a characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the substance.
States of Matter solid, liquid, gas
Production of Heat or Light evidence of release of energy during a chemical change.
Production of a Precipitate evidence of a new solid formed from a chemical change, solid particles that form out of a liquid.
Production of a Gas evidence of a new substance formed from a chemical change.
Color Change visible change in substance coloration.
Temperature Change increase or decrease in heat energy in a substance.
