1. Basic Concept

Measurements Of Electricity such as volts and amps definitions

TermDefinition
circuit a complete electrical path; it typically includes a power source, conductors, a load, and a switch.
electrical current (I) produced by the movement of electrons; this movement occurs when electrons are removed from their atoms.
conductor the wires that carry the electricity
insulators Materials in which electrons can't be moved easily from their atoms are poor conductors of electricity
direct current (DC) When electrons move in one direction, the resulting current flow
alternating current (AC) When electrons move in both directions, the current flow
voltage (V) the pressure required to force electrons into a wire; measured in units
amperage (A) measures by amps The amount of electric current flowing through a circuit is
ammeter Amperage is measured with blank ; which measures the rate of electron flow that passes through a cross-section of wire.
Electrical resistance (R) is the opposition that a circuit creates against the flow of electrical current.
ohms (R) The magnitude (size) of electrical resistance in a circuit is measured in
Watts are used to measure power, or the amount of useful work that can be done by a circuit.
Ohm's Law that current in amperes multiplied by resistance in ohms equals voltage in volts
Electrical power expressed in watts, which is the product of voltage (in volts) multiplied by current (in amperes).
wattage of an electrical device is the amount of power needed to enable it to function properly.
power source feeds power into the circuit. In homes, the power source is the service panel.
load any device, such as a light fixture or appliance, that runs with electricity.
switch the device used to turn the electricity flow on and off.
kilowatt-hour (kWh) The unit that’s commonly used to measure electrical energy
hertz The frequency of electron movement is measured in these units
closed circuit when the switch is turned on, electrical current from the power source flows through an unbroken path to the load.
open circuit When the switch is turned off, the path of the circuit is broken, and the current can’t flow to the load. The light goes out or the appliance stops running
free electron or valence electron The outermost shell containing only one electron
electric field electrical force field of atoms similar to magnetic field positive and negative atoms
Energy the amount of power that’s used over a period of time
kilowatt-hour meter The amount of energy used in your home is measured by an electric meter
