QuestionAnswer
Name an organism that feeds on dead organisms or animal wastes causing them to decay. Decomposers.
What does the law of conservation of mass state about the mass of the reactants and the mass of the products in a chemical reaction? They are equal
List three properties of metals Any three from Shiny, conducts heat, conducts electricity, malleable and flexible
What is the name of the compound formed when zinc atoms join to oxygen atoms? Zinc oxide
What is the name of a chemical reaction where an element joins with oxygen? Oxidation
What is the general name for a substance that is burnt to release energy A fuel
What is the definition of a Hydrocarbon? A compound formed from only Carbon and Hydrogen atoms
Describe the chemical test for carbon dioxide Bubble the gas through limewater. If the limewater goes cloudy the gas is carbon dioxide
Describe the chemical test for water Water turns anhydrous cobalt chloride paper from blue to pink
What is the name of a chemical reaction that gives out heat energy? Exothermic
List the three sides of the fire triangle Heat, fuel, oxygen
If 10g of MagnesIum is burnt in air to produce 16g of Magnesium Oxide what mass of oxygen must have joined to the magnesium ? 6g
List three properties of non metal elements Not shiny, does not conduct electricity, does not conduct heat
What is the name of the compound formed when carbon atoms join to oxygen atoms? Carbon dioxide /Carbon Oxide
If copper metal is oxidised what compound is formed? Copper Oxide
What is the general name for a substance that is burnt to release energy? A fuel
What two gases cause acid rain? Sulfur Dioxide and Nitrogen Oxide
Define "combustion" A reaction with oxygen in which energy is transferred to the surroundings
What is the general equation for combustion? Fuel + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
Define "conservation of mass" Mass of reactants = mass of products
What are the devices that reduce the harmful gas produced by car exhausts? Catalytic converter.
What is complete combustion of a fuel? Combustion that produces only water and carbon dioxide
What is incomplete combustion of a fuel? Combustion that produces a mixture of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbon and water and produces less energy
What causes incomplete combustion? It occurs because there is not enough oxygen for all of the reactants to be fully oxidised.
What is soot? Fine particles of carbon
What do we call changes that occur to the weather as a result of global warming? Climate Change.
Name three greenhouse gases carbon dioxide, water vapour methane
Why do greenhouse gases cause global warming? They absorb energy emitted from the Earth’s surface and then emit it back to the surface.
Name three possible effects of climate change. •Droughts, Famines, Sea Level Rise leading to flooding,Increased storms and hurricanes, Dangerous heat waves
Define "combustion" A reaction with oxygen in which energy is transferred to the surroundings
What is the general equation for combustion? Fuel + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
Define "conservation of mass" Mass of reactants = mass of products
What is "combustion" more commonly known as? Burning
Name three fossil fuels Coal, oil, natural gas
Name 3 greenhouse gases Water, carbon dioxide and methane
Describe 2 ways that humans are contributing to climate change Burning fossil fuels and deforestation
Describe the greenhouse effect Greenhouse gases prevent heat from escaping from the Earth into space
