Plants, Matter, Cells

TermDefinition
solid matter that has a definite volume and a definite shape
liquid matter that has a definite volume, but no definite shape; takes the shape of the container that it is in
gas matter that does not have a definite shape or a definite volume
solid particles are very close together-packed tightly
liquid particles are not as close together and can flow over and under other particles
gas particles are further apart, bounce off each other, and move very fast
physical change cutting, bending, and wetting matter are ways to cause this type of change
chemical change when matter burns, oxidizes, or is dissolved in an acid, this type of change occurs and the change is permanent
mixture a combination of two or more substances that keep their identity
solution a "special mixture" that has the same composition throughout
nucleus center of the atom
proton positive charge; found in the nucleus
neutron no charge; found in the nucleus
electron negative charge; move very fast around the nucleus in an orbit called the electron cloud
Cell Membrane surround the cell and controls what enters and leaves it
Cell Wall surrounds and provides support for plant cells
Chloroplast uses energy from the sunlight to make food; only in plant cells
Cytoplasm jelly-like substance that holds organelles in place
Mitochondria Powerhouse of the cell; releases energy the cell needs to work
Nucleus brain of the cell; directs the cell's activities
Vacuole stores water, nutrients, and wastes
mass amount of matter in an object
volume amount of space an object takes up
microscope helps us see VERY small objects
stopwatch helps us measure elapsed time in minutes and seconds
ruler helps us measure length in cm and mm
temperature measures the energy of motion of the particles in matter
Boiling Point 100 degrees Celsius and 212 degrees Fahrenheit
Freezing Point 0 degrees Celsius and 32 degrees Fahrenheit
Dmitri Mendeleev person who arranged the periodic table by atomic weight and similar properties
element a pure substance that cannot be broken down into any other substance; recognized by a symbol on the periodic table
atom smallest bit of matter
compound two or more elements combined
molecule smallest part of a compound
stem supports the plant; transports water and nutrients to the plant
leaves Chlorophyll is located here and helps the plants absorb sunlight to make food
flower attracts birds and bees; makes seeds
roots absorbs water and nutrients from the soil
Photosynthesis process in which plants make food
oxygen plants release this during photosynthesis
carbon dioxide plants take this in to use for photosynthesis; humans and animals release it
glucose simple sugar made during photosynthesis for plants to use as food

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then tap the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, tap the green Know box. Otherwise, tap the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, tap "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just tap on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
