Civics Module 2 Lesson 1 Key Terms

Mercantilism Selling more than you buy.
Salutary Neglect When Great Britain left colonist alone to rule themselves.
Taxation A mandatory contribution to the government.
Representation Speaking or acting on behalf of someone.
Boycott To refuse to buy goods.
Protest A statement or action expressing disapproval of something.
Declaration of Independence Officially separated the 13 colonies from Great Britain.
Thomas Jefferson Main author of the Declaration of Independence.
Sons of Liberty Group founded to protest taxes by the British.
First Continental Congress When representative from the colonies meet to discuss how to respond to the Intolerable Acts.
Second Continental Congress When representative from the colonies meet to discuss declaring independence from Great Britain.
Proclamation of 1763 Line drawn by British parliament preventing the colonists from moving west into the Ohio River Valley.
Act A law (typically that deals with taxes).
Grievances Another word for complaints.
