Energy Pyramids
Term | Definition |

Flow of Energy | How energy moves through an ecosystem from the sun, to producers, to consumers, and on to the next consumer, and so on. |
Joule | Unit for Energy. |
Autotroph | Organism that makes its own food. |
Heterotrophs | Organism that cannot make their own food, so they have to eat other things like plants or animals. |
Carnivore | Organisms that eat only meat. |
Omnivore | Organisms that eat both plants and meat. |
Herbivore | Organisms that eat only plants. |
Scavengers | Organisms that eat bodies of dead organisms. |
Organism | A living thing that moves, eats, respires, grows, reproduces, and shows sensitivity to stimuli. |
Producer | Organisms that make their own food, that is on the first trophic level of an energy pyramid. |
Primary Consumer | Organisms that eat producers, that is on the second trophic level of an energy pyramid. |
Secondary Consumer | Carnivorous organisms that eat primary consumers and each other, that is on the third trophic level of an energy pyramid. |
Tertiary Consumer | Carnivorous organisms that eats primary and secondary consumers and each other, , that is on the fourth trophic level of an energy pyramid. |
Quaternary Consumers | Carnivorous organisms that may eat primary, secondary, and tertiary consumers. Also known as an Apex Predator who is not naturally hunted by anything else in that ecosystem and is at the top trophic level of the energy pyramid. |
Decomposer | Organisms that recycle dead organisms into chemical nutrients used in soil, air, and water. |
