Russian Vocabulary terms

Siberia vast region of eastern Russia, extending from the Ural Mountains in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east, much of it is frozen for over half the year
Steppe an extensive, usually treeless plain, often dry and grass-covered
Volga longest river of Europe, in western Russia
Taiga the subarctic coniferous forests located south of the tundra in North America, northern Europe, and Asia
Czar an emperor or king, an autocratic ruler or leader
Ivan the Terrible A Russian czar of the sixteenth century who struggled constantly with the nobles of Russia and became famous for his brutality toward his enemies
Abdicate to give up a high office formally or officially, especially the throne
Kremlin a fortress or citadel in a Russian city
Moscow a city in and the capital of the Russian Federation
Aral Sea an inland sea between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, East of the Caspian Sea
