Chapt 4 Lesson 1 Mesopotamia quiz

What does Mesopotamia mean? It is Greek for "land between the rivers".
What are civilizations? complex societies that have organized government, culture, and writing
What is irrigation? a method that brings water to crops
What do City-States have? have their own government but is not part of any larger units
What is cuneiform? a form of writing development by the people in Sumer
Where did the first civilizations arose (start)? in the river valleys because of farming conditions
What is a Sumerian temple Ziggurt for? to honor their chief God
Although most Sumerians were farmers, what do many others do? many made metal, cloth, and pottery because they were skilled artisans
Few Sumerians who have learned how to write often hold what position? high positions in society as scribes
What is the Sumerian calendar based on? the number 60
