Mexican American War | war fought between Mexico and the US because President Polk was determined to get California and New Mexico from Mexico. |
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo | Ended the Mexican American War. Mexico ceded the area called the Mexican Cession to the US who paid Mexico 15 million dollars. |
Mexican Cession | land Mexico ceded to the US after the Mexican American War. This territory was later divided into six US states. |
Forty-Niners | people who went to California during the gold rush |

Mormons | a religious group started in Palmyra, NY by Joseph Smith. Official name is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints |
Joseph Smith | He founded the Mormon Church in 1830. He and his followers were forced to move westward. He was killed in Missouri |
Brigham Young | He became leader of the Mormons upon the death of the founder and moved the Mormons to Utah |
